Juneau Children Outdoors Community Coalition

The Juneau Children Outdoors is a group of parents, educators, nonprofit and natural resource agency staff, medical professionals and more, who are finding ways to collaboratively connect children with nature. The coalition has worked on the several initiatives/events including: the annual Children's Outdoor Clothing Exchange,Spring Equinox Jamboree, Annual Southeast Alaska BioBlitz, Science & Nature workshop series for parents & childcare providers and promoting Nature Clubs for Families. We are also teaming up with other coalitions to develop an Environmental Literacy Plan for Alaska and will be launching a statewide website "Get Outdoors Alaska", where families can go to learn about outdoor opportunities in their own communities. Upcoming opportunities include: more collaborative "Kids in Nature" workshops and AEYC-SEA's regional conference. The entire conference will be focusing on connecting children with nature. Stay tuned to learn more about "Beaches, Boots & Berries: Learning Through Nature. March 10-12, 2011. Martin LeBlanc of CNN will be joining us this year as a keynote speaker.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
